A series of textile workshops with Hector Dyer, an artist with a strong interest in contemporary weaving and hand sewing skills.

Wednesday 1st November - Appliqué

We will design and create original works using appliqué which involves hand-sewing and embroidery. This technique revolves around using all parts of cloth that you have spare and conjuring an image out of 'blank' cloth. I will take you through a few examples and a step-by-step technique I have developed for how to create imagery and texture to your work. This is aimed at beginners as well as those more experienced and there is a large range of unusual fabrics to work with. If you have your own fabric scissors then you are welcome to bring them in as well.

Wednesday 15th November - Weaving with Paint

This is a new technique I have recently been working with which combines painting and weaving. Rather than using threads for weaving, we will be painting our own designs onto fabric which we will then cut up into the warp and weft, before weaving them together on frame looms. We will cover the fundamentals of weaving and this is aimed at beginners as well as those more experienced.

If you have your own fabric scissors then you are welcome to bring them in as well.

Biography

I am a self-taught artist based in Glasgow whose work spans textiles, performance, and social engagement. I am interested in medical history, how our bodies can become viewed or compared to machines and the consequences of this. I like to disassemble and reassemble the body, looking at different methods of healing. I respond through my own experience as a disabled, non-binary person and the ongoing negotiations this provokes.

I grew up on the coast, surrounded by post-industrial horizons and energy plants. I have made a series of works and performances around nuclear energy and the legacies we are leaving behind. My DIY process is an important part of how I approach and present my work. I like to show the thread and stitches that hold something together - I don’t try to hide the construction methods or cover up variations. My work is often soft and fragile, and I want this to be something you can feel and know. Alongside this I work as a weaver for Vevar in the East End of Glasgow.
