Press Conference, Rally, and Speak-out! At least 25 states have announced plans to eliminate the $300 a week subsidy in federal unemployment benefits that was extended under the American Rescue Plan. Texas, as you know, is among them.
At 10 AM join us for a Press Conference outside the U.S. Department of Labor, A. Maceo Smith Federal Building. Texans will have their voices heard as we demand "No unemployment cuts"!
Afterwards we will rally and continue to speak-out against this violent anti-worker decision. June 26th is far too soon to end life-saving aid that we were promised through the summer.
The ridiculous argument behind taking away this needed assistance is that there is a “labor shortage” and that “people need to be incentivized to return to work”. However a huge number of people don't have access to childcare and cannot return (overwhelmingly hurting women in particular). Many others cannot risk being exposed to COVID 19. There is not a labor shortage, there is a major job shortage! And more than anything the issue has to do with the abysmally low wages in these states.
