The Evil Dead series has gone every which way, from brutal backwoods shocks to manic slapstick; it’s in its elasticity that the films find their brilliance. So how would a remake without the Raimi/Campbell duo front-and-center fare? Turns out, pretty damn good. Filmmaker Fede Álvarez’s iteration of cabin fever doesn’t skimp on gore and shocks, with Jane Levy’s performance acting as the dramatic fulcrum keeping it all in place, beyond all of the nails and splinters and other objects getting lodged in people’s faces.
