Carrington brings her new Social Science ensemble to perform music from her latest Motéma release Waiting Game.
Championed in her youth by the likes of Art Blakey, Jack DeJohnette and Buddy Rich, Carrington has risen to become a major instrumental and compositional figure, having collaborated with a who’s-who of jazz royalty, including long-term associations with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Esperanza Spalding. She won GRAMMYs for her all-star 2011 album The Mosaic Project and 2013’s Money Jungle: Provocative In Blue, a fresh take on Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach’s seminal 1962 trio session Money Jungle.
Waiting Game is Carrington’s most audacious and politically charged project, tackling subjects of racism, homophobia, gender equality, mass incarceration, and police brutality, featuring a superlative band including keyboardist Aaron Parks, guitarist Matthew Stevens, and DJ Kassa Overall — a group formed as a reaction to the 2016 presidential election. They assemble for this first night of Carrington’s residency, with GRAMMY-nominated rapper, DJ, and producer Kokayi standing in for Overall.
