Happy new year! And welcome back for another Terran Sunday movie night. We’re kicking off the year with a comedy, a cringe inducing classic by Elaine May called “The Heartbreak Kid”. This black comedy is a sort of anti-romcom, exploring what would happen to the type of guy who gets married on a whim while he’s on his honeymoon. The answer is he’d probably fall in love all over again, much to the chagrin of his new wife. Doors open at 18:00 with lights going down at 18:30. There will be a brief presentation, and then a discussion will be held afterwards. Popcorn will be provided as always, but feel free to bring any other sort of refreshments you might want!“The Heartbreak Kid” is a comedy that finds humor in tragedy. The film’s protagonist, Lenny (played brilliantly by Charles Gordin), is as low of a scumbag as someone can be. Always obsessed with the next best thing, whether it’s a new job opportunity, a new social circle to join in, or a new wife after he wakes up disenchanted by the one he just married, there is no lie that Lenny won’t tell, no opportunity he won’t take, and no situation he won’t insert himself into if it means he can get what he wants. Watching a man lie and cheat on his new wife would be horrible to witness in real life, but the movie hates him and there’s something cathartic about hating him too. Half the time I’m laughing because his antics are so naked and shocking, and it’s hard to believe that anyone would choose to behave that way; the other half of the time I’m laughing out of discomfort at the sheer nerve he displays when it comes to manipulating the people he meets. He’s such a naked liar that it almost makes you believe the lies, because no one would tell such an obvious lie on purpose, right?? Lotta people out there like that, so I think it’s nice to see that type committed to screen. Very funny, very grim movie.
