All are invited to join us for the service of Tenebrae. This tradition has been held during Holy Week for more than a thousand years.Tenebrae means “shadows”, and this service is a meditation on the shadows and darkness of Christ’s suffering and death, focussing on the Last Supper, Gethsemane, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.
Readings trace the story of Christ’s passion, music portrays its pathos, and the ambience of candles and shadows conveys the mystery of Holy Week.
As candles are extinguished, we mark Christ’s steps towards death. After the final candle has been extinguished, we hear the dramatic sound of the “strepitus”, representing the earthquake at the time of the Lord’s death and the tearing of the curtain in the Temple.
Finally, through the return of the single flame of the Easter candle, we anticipate the joy of the Lord’s victory over all shadows.
