A documentary play by Rae Vineberg, Directed by Alison Darcy and Rae Vineberg. Telegraph from Departure Bay/ la création de la preuve is an intimate, tender and stirring documentary play about 8 men who are haunted and wrestling with the painful memories from the past, and pivotal moments in their lives when they tragically took a wrong turn. All of the men are unsure, even now, that they are free and clear; not one of them is standing on undoubtedly solid ground. We move from one of their stories to another; memories, realizations and resonances arise, prompting the next man to speak, as in an unspecified men's circle. The men in the play are longing for a basic sense of place, and worth, and seeking to belong, in a world that all too often stigmatizes their mistakes and writes them off. The thing that unites the men and their stories is regret; how to reconcile with the pain of the past, and find a way forward, from moments in one’s life when they desperately wish they would have taken a different path.
The cast of the 25th Live Staged Reading is extraordinary, including many actors from the original production: Tyrone Benskin, Howard Bilerman, Paul Patrick Charbonneau, Alex Ivanovici, Neil Kroetsch, Christian Paul, Howard Rosenstein and Bill Rowat. Tim Kingsbury is scoring the play, and will play live during the reading. Alison Darcy of Scapegoat Carnivale is joining the playwright, Rae Vineberg, as co-director. Vineberg and Logan Williams are co-producing the reading, and Chad Dembski will stage manage. An amazing, not-to-be-missed event.
Praise from the first run of Telegraph from Departure Bay/ la création de la preuve:
A production like Telegraph first challenges your concept of theatre before it even starts to challenge you on its subject- you aren’t going to get a straight-up cup of tea… Fascinating. -Gaetan L. Charlebois.
Meaty, inspiring theatre, an urgent, brief communication… slickly choreographed, a rigorous, uplifting work. -Pat Donnelly.
Rae Vineberg is doing important work. (She) can see beyond the physical, believing that these men have important messages for the rest of us- scratchy dispatches from the other side… (Vineberg) is really onto something. -Amy Barratt.
Tickets 25$ for students and unemployed, 30$ general. Box Office: 1-855-550-SHOW or online: https://lepointdevente.com/billets/clo251019002
