Poetry Out Loud is a National program celebrating poetry by offering a competition where high school students recite poetry from a selected list or Anthology of poems. Each student will recite 3 poems displaying understanding of the work as well as a bit of dramatic flare. Tehama County will hold its competition February 5, 2026. The winner will then compete at the state finals in March, followed by the national finals in April. Each step offers financial awards for the students as well as travel costs to the next level for the winners. County winners receive $300 for 1st place, $200 for 2nd place and $100 for 3rd place. Tehama County Arts Council offers teachers a stipend for helping students, outside the school day, prepare for the competition. We know this requires extra work on your part and wish to help make it a little easier. If you are a teacher and you bring one student to the competition we give you $200. If you bring more, the stipend goes up! The state and national competition require that the student recite 3 poems from the new anthology. The county competition only requires 2 recited poems. The Poetry Out Loud program has lesson plans, videos, examples of the scoring sheets and several other great resources. Visit Poetry Out Loud, www.https://poetryoutloud.org/, for all these details. TCAC needs to have the names of participating students by January 7, 2026. Any question? Contact us at [email protected]. The last winner was from Red Bluff High. Where will the next winner be from? Most of our winners were encouraged by counselors and administrators knowing it will look great on a college application or resume. We are hoping you choose to participate and look forward to working with you.
