About this Event
This special Salon will take place Thursday, May 30th, at The Jessie Ball duPont Center downtown.
We’ll be screening four original talks filmed specifically for this event. We’ll hear from citizens whose unique perspectives — journalist, artist, activist, and technologist — inform their ideas about how we can build a more collaborative, responsive, and expansive democracy. We’ll also engage in dynamic breakout sessions with skilled facilitators to discuss these ideas with our audience. Wine, beer, and light bites are included with your ticket.
Audience Breakout sessions:
Mind the Gap: How can we strengthen intergenerational collaboration?
Moderator Dr. Michael Binder, joined by Will Brown
We're the most age-diverse and age-segregated society in human history, and we’re facing immense challenges that no generation can solve alone. How can we avoid generational showdowns and spark opportunities to create a healthier, more inclusive democracy for all ages?
Sparking Change: How to be an active citizen
Moderator Dr. Sean Freeder, joined by Hope McMath
What does it mean to be an active citizen? It's about more than just voting and paying taxes. We can't rely on the state alone to solve all our problems — we must embrace our capacity to be change-makers and engage in solving public issues.
Democracy 4.0: Retrofitting democracy for the future
Moderator Dr. Nicholas Seabrook, joined by Ramon Perez
The historian Danielle Allen has said that democracy is a technology for collective, human decision making. But living in the 21st century while still in legal and constitutional thrall to the 18th is creating fissures in our system. What additional technological and structural reforms could help strengthen democracy?
Can’t We Just Talk? | Strengthening civil discourse by having better conversations
Dr. Richmond Wynn, joined by Desmond Meade
Effective, rigorous debate is vital to a thriving democracy, and we need to be able to get along — even with the people we may fiercely disagree with. To strength democracy's ecosystem, we must encourage respectful and constructive dialogue across political divides, foster a culture of civil discourse, and combat misinformation and polarization through media literacy programs, community forums, and initiatives to promote empathy and understanding.
