❓WHY SHOULD I RECYCLE MY ELECTRONICS?
E-waste is incredibly toxic to the environment, and throwing it away in regular trash ensures that heavy metals like lead, and toxic chemicals could end up in our ground water. According to the E.P.A., 70% of the toxins found in landfills come from e-waste even though it only contributes 1% of landfill volume. Some of the toxins in e-waste can include: lead, mercury, cadmium, phosphors, and flame-retardants. In addition to these serious health hazards, e-waste recycling and reuse reduces the energy and resources used up during the manufacture, transit, and sale of new electronics. By recycling, you decrease energy and water use, reduce pollution, and keep hazardous chemicals out of our air and water. Finally, it’s also required by law! In New York State, it’s illegal to throw your e-waste in the trash. You could be fined $100 for illegally discarding your electronics. For more information about the law, see the Electronics Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act.
❓HAVE A LOT OF STUFF?
If you are planning to drop off a larger amount of equipment ( 7 full sized items such as computers, TVs, printers) at an event we would appreciate if you could come within the first 3 hours of the event.
❓ WHAT HAPPENS TO MY DATA?
The Lower East Side Ecology Center guarantee data security in all their disposal programs. For older computers and other data storage devices like external hard drives, data will be physically shredded during the recycling process. They only work with recyclers who guarantee data security during transportation and processing. While it is not necessary to wipe your hard drive before recycling, you can do your own data removal by using KillDisk or Darik’s Boot and Nuke, both programs are free.
❓WHAT ABOUT BATTERIES?
Any store that sells rechargeable batteries must take back those batteries for recycling. Ikea also recycles non-rechargeable batteries. You can also drop off all types of batteries starting on July 1, 2021 at DSNY SAFE events or their Special Household Waste Collection sites.
❓CAN I RECEIVE TAX DONATION FOR MY EQUIPMENT?
Yes. Please ask one of our staff about getting a tax deduction form when you drop off your e-waste.
