Teaching Gifted Multilingual Learners with Depth and Complexity
Date: November 21, 2024
Time: 8:30am to 3:30pm
Speaker: Marcy Voss
Who are gifted multilingual learners and how can educators play a role in their identification? What are their social and emotional needs and how can educators address these? How can educators structure curriculum and instruction to simultaneously meet both the learning and language needs of gifted multilingual learners?
This workshop, based on the book Teaching Gifted Multilingual Learners (MLs) with Depth and Complexity, provides practical answers for educators seeking to better identify and serve gifted multilingual learners. Participants will learn how to combine best practices in gifted education with best practices in education for multilingual learners to meet the needs of these students. Tools and information will be provided to help educators become talent scouts in the gifted identification process. Strategies will be shared to meet the social and emotional needs of these students. Guidance and examples of how to combine sheltered instruction with Depth and Complexity will help participants simultaneously meet their students’ language and learning needs. Participants will leave with practical ideas to identify and serve gifted multilingual learners.
Participants will leave the workshop equipped to:
- Identify gifted multilingual learners using a checklist of characteristics
- Structure classroom interaction so that gifted multilingual learners’ social and emotional needs are met
- Create activities and lessons that require multilingual learners to use academic vocabulary to listen, speak, read, and write while also thinking in more in-depth, complex ways
- Advocate for the needs of gifted multilingual learners
