This event will be held in the Ventana Salon at the Albuquerque Museum.Join teacher Claudio Pérez, the creator of the Albuquerque Museum’s Border Doors: Puertas Fronterizas exhibit, for an inspiring workshop focused on Latin American migration. Claudio will share his project’s inspiration, offer a background on migration, and provide a lesson plan for educators to bring back to their classrooms. Participants will reflect on the immigrant experience and explore how art can be a powerful tool for storytelling and change. Educators will also enjoy a private tour of the exhibit and create their own "border door," reflecting on the human stories behind immigration, while leaving with a lesson plan to implement in their teaching.
Claudio Pérez is a Spanish Teacher at Sandia Preparatory School. Since 2014, he has been taking his advanced Spanish-language students to El Paso, Texas where they utilize their Spanish skills to interact first-hand with immigrants and advocates at the Cristo Rey Border Immersion Program. Upon their return to Albuquerque, students illustrate a series of doors containing colorful and powerful imagery that tells the stories of the people they met and reflect on major themes of immigration at the border. The doors in the exhibit encourage visitors to consider the lived experiences of immigrants at the center of a complex historical relationship between the United States and Mexico (source: ABQ Museum).
