About this Event
Tea Ceremony with Miles Bothwell and Sadie Chan / Tea Bowl Class with Sandy Beckerman
at Bitter Root Pottery Hayden Tract/Match Stoneware.
A very special, two part event, that will introduce participants to the centuries old connection between tea and ceramics.
Chado, the "Way of Tea," fundamentally is just a way of mindfully sharing space with others over a bowl of tea. It is a seven-hundred-year-old tradition rooted in four principles: peace, respect, purity, and tranquility.
Miles Bothwell and Sadie Chen will conduct Tsuki Chabako (月茶箱), the fall seasonal procedure of the Chabako series. Inherent in its style and namesake, the tsuki, or moon, procedure highlights autumn cool weather and an appreciation of the stars and moon. It is also the only tea procedure in all of tea ceremony to employ incense, harkening to olden times with Kōdo - the Way of Fragrance.
Bitter Root Pottery is excited to announce a very unique opportunity in partnership with Match Stoneware - an authentic Tsuki Chabako Tea Procedure led by tea experts Miles Bothwell* and Sadie Chen.
Seated on Japanese cushions you will share an intimate space with each other over a bowl of fresh 2022 matcha and delicious Japanese sweets. Then Miles will discuss tea ceremony aesthetics and their diverse histories.
Afterward, you will get to sit at the potter wheels and Sandy Beckerman will guide you in a wheel-throwing class to craft your very own tea bowl.
Lastly, you will get to keep the Match Stoneware tea bowl from the ceremony. Match Stoneware is also offering a 20% discount to use in their showroom that day only.

*Miles Bothwell has practiced Tea Ceremony and studied its history for eleven years. His tea pursuits began when he was a teenager living in a Buddhist retreat center. He has a degree in Japanese Culture and Language from Washington University in St Louis, with a focus on the history of gender roles within Tea Ceremony and their sociological impacts. In Japan, he spent three years practicing both in its cultural hub, Kyoto, and in Yamagata Prefecture in northern Japan. Throughout this time he has worked in the Japanese tea industry, educating in Tea Ceremony history and its relevance to modern day culture, along with tea nutrition and the best methods for preparing both modern and traditional matcha beverages. Here in Los Angeles he consults for local matcha companies and practices under Keiko Nakada-sensei, periodically hosting public Tea Ceremony presentations at the Shoseian tea house in Glendale.
