"And God Said to Me: The Visual Imaginaries of Alyne Harris"
Dr. Porchia Moore will discuss the visual imaginaries of self-taught artist Alyne Harris and how her collaboration with curator Anne Gilroy constructs both a local and regional memory as informed by Harris's work. Moore will make connections between spiritual and intuitive leanings in Ms. Harris's works and the promises that emerge which help construct Harris's lived experiences as a Black woman born and raised in the Black Atlantic and the impact on Florida Studies and material memory. Moore will share about the City of Gainesville's commitment to cultivating a collection of the works of Alyne Harris and how reading her work as an autobiographical text to better contextualize her importance in the canon of self-taught artists.
