Kina Harvesting :
Are you confident in the water and have strong snorkelling skills? We would love for you to join us as a community volunteer to help remove kina off a portion of the reef at Te Kohuroa. The purpose of removing kina is to assist in growing back the kelp forests that help sustain a diversity of life on the reef, whilst working towards long term and sustain protection for the reef so that it can thrive (including the kina) for many years to come. Suitable for 12 year olds and up, children younger than 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult in the water. Snorkelling gear can be provided for free including wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, and gloves.
Kina counting and data collection:
Prefer to stay on land? Why not assist us in kina counting and data recording. A critical part of the Te Kohuroa Rewilding Initiative is to gather information about the reef and the restoration activities being carried out in order to understand what state the reef is currently in and what impact active restoration will have. Suitable for 5 year olds and up, children younger than 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
