After taking a year off to rest, reflect, and regroup, Diversity Alliance of the Puget Sound (DAPS) is honored to bring Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) back to Tacoma. This year, we return with a renewed commitment to visibility, community care, and systemic change.
Our 2025 theme, “Unlearning Shame,” invites us to explore how shame operates both personally and collectively—and how trans communities across Washington are actively unlearning it in order to live, love, and thrive.
About This Year’s Gathering
At DAPS, we approach TDOR as more than a memorial. It is a space for reflection, education, and connection—where we honor those we have lost while also examining the cultural and systemic forces that lead to anti-trans violence.
Throughout the evening, we will be joined by trans professionals, activists, artists, parents, and allies who are confronting shame in their work and communities. Together, we will explore:
-How systems such as policy, education, and healthcare can either perpetuate or dismantle shame
-How trans individuals and families are creating spaces for collective healing and belonging
-How visibility, art, and joy serve as acts of resistance and remembrance
The program will conclude with a candlelight vigil and reading of names, honoring those lost to anti-trans violence and reaffirming our commitment to protecting and uplifting the living.
All genders and allies are welcome—this is a trans-centered, community-care space
Why “Unlearning Shame”?
Shame is one of the oldest tools of control. It is embedded in culture, institutions, and even our own self-perception.
To honor those we have lost, we must also unlearn the shame that keeps the living silent.
This year’s TDOR is both an act of remembrance and a call to collective healing. Together, we reclaim the dignity, courage, and belonging that shame has tried to take from us.
