Tchaikovsky: Violin ConcertoJohn Adams: Harmonielehre
Once described as unplayable, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto today is a gem of the repertoire and beloved by audiences for its lyrical beauty and technical brilliance. Armed with virtuosity to spare, soloist Benjamin Beilman masterfully scampers in and around the orchestra before a rousing finale. Michael Francis finishes the evening with acclaimed American composer John Adams’ Harmonielehre – “the book of harmony’’ − a thriller that marries Minimalism with Mahler and the late-Romantics, reflecting Adams’ unique voice in contemporary classical music.
We’re full of surprises. Every Masterworks concert has a surprise inside – a short mystery piece that connects to the program in an unexpected way. Each one is Michael Francis’ little secret.
