Le pianiste belge Florian Noack est un aventurier réputé pour son intérêt pour les œuvres les moins jouées du répertoire. Lors de ce concert, il interprète le Premier Concerto pour piano du compositeur russe Nikolaï Medtner, un contemporain et ami de Serge Rachmaninov.
Tchaïkovski compose sa Cinquième Symphonie en 1888, alors qu’il est au sommet de son art. Un thème – une sorte d’idée fixe suivant l’exemple de la Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz – revient dans les quatre mouvements. D’aucuns l’ont interprété comme le thème du destin, mais, comme l’a fait remarquer un critique juste à l’issue de la création de l’œuvre : « Là où dans la Cinquième Symphonie de Beethoven le destin frappe à la porte, dans la Cinquième Symphonie de Tchaïkovski, le destin tente de s’échapper. »

De Belgische pianist Florian Noack houdt ervan het publiek minder gekend werken te presenteren en wordt daarom alom geroemd. In dit concert voert hij het Eerste pianoconcerto uit van de Russische componist Nikolai Medtner, een tijdgenoot en vriend van Rachmaninov.
Tsjaikovki schreef zijn Vijfde symfonie in 1888, op het hoogtepunt van zijn artistieke kunnen. Eén thema – een soort ‘idee fixe’ in navolging van Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique – duikt in alle vier de bewegingen op. Velen interpreteren dit thema als het noodlot, maar “waar in Beethovens Vijfde symfonie het noodlot aan de deur klopt,” aldus een recensent net na de première op: “daar probeert in Tsjaikovski’s Vijfde symfonie het noodlot te ontsnappen”.

Tchaikovsky wrote his Fifth Symphony in 1888, at the height of his artistic powers. One theme – a kind of 'idée fixe' reminiscent of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique – appears in all four movements. Many interpret this theme as fate, but “whereas fate knocks at the door in Beethoven's Fifth Symphony”, one reviewer remarked shortly after the premiere “fate tries to escape in Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony”.
