Join southside artist Alex! Jimenez in a free workshop to explore the impacts of the Trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination that affected many residents of the southside of Tucson. If you or a loved one was affected or if you care about environmental justice and want to contribute, you are welcome! Drop-in SATURDAY, AUGUST 23rd from 10am-2pm at the Valencia Library (202 W Valencia Rd., Tucson, AZ 85706) to create a small clay tile that will be included in a mosaic mural to be installed at Mission Manor Park. Clay construction will take approximately 30 minutes to an hour.
This event is part of a project titled Survival and Resistance: Remembering the Southside’s Environmental Justice Movement. This is a yearlong commemoration that honors the work of Tucson’s south side community, which beginning in the 1980s, organized a historic fight against trichloroethylene (TCE) groundwater contamination and environmental racism. Through free community programming across Pima County, Survival and Resistance will celebrate the undertold story of residents that fought for decades for the health of their community and their drinking water. Working in partnership with those directly impacted, this project celebrates south side resistance, survival, and healing.
