TCCC–CLS (Tactical Combat Casualty Care – Combat Lifesaver, Tier 2)
The TCCC–CLS course is a 40-hour program designed to prepare non-medical military personnel to provide enhanced lifesaving interventions on the battlefield. As the Tier 2 level of Tactical Combat Casualty Care training, it bridges the gap between All Service Member (ASM) first responder skills and the advanced medical capabilities of unit medics or corpsmen.
Course Purpose:
This course equips designated Combat Lifesavers with the knowledge and skills to manage preventable causes of death in combat environments. By expanding the scope of care beyond basic lifesaving measures, the CLS serves as a critical link in the continuum of battlefield medical support, ensuring casualties receive timely, effective interventions during the “care under fire” and “tactical field care” phases.
Course Objectives:
Participants will learn to:
Perform advanced bleeding control using tourniquets, hemostatic dressings, and pressure bandages
Establish and maintain basic and advanced airway techniques appropriate for non-medical providers
Recognize and treat tension pneumothorax with needle decompression and chest seals
Administer selected medications for pain control and infection prevention (per unit SOP and training)
Manage shock and hypothermia to improve casualty survival
Conduct casualty assessments and communicate effectively with medics, corpsmen, or evacuation teams
Execute casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) procedures in both ground and air environments
Training Methodology:
The course combines classroom instruction, skill stations, and scenario-based field training exercises. Stress-inoculation techniques and realistic combat simulations are incorporated to build confidence, decision-making, and resilience under fire.
Target Audience:
Non-medical personnel designated as Combat Lifesavers
Military personnel deploying in support of combat operations or serving in high-threat environments where medical evacuation may be delayed
Certification:
Successful graduates receive a TCCC–CLS Certificate of Completion
Training is aligned with the latest CoTCCC guidelines and recognized across the Department of Defense
Why It Matters:
TCCC–CLS enhances unit survivability by providing every squad or team with personnel capable of delivering lifesaving care beyond the immediate capabilities of all service members. The course empowers non-medical warfighters to extend the “golden hour,” reduce preventable deaths, and sustain combat power in austere environments.
