The Taylor-Butler House was constructed in 1853 by descendants of Edward Taylor, a noted loyalist who supported the British during the American Revolution. Some historians believe that he may have been involved in the notorious murder of prominent Middletown patriot Joseph Murray.Throughout much of the war, Taylor was placed under house arrest at Marlpit Hall, which is located next to the Taylor-Butler House. He effectively acted as a spy for the British.
Edward Taylor was confined to house arrest for a significant portion of the Revolutionary War, beginning in 1777. While the precise duration is not documented, historical records suggest he spent a considerable amount of time within its confines.
During the retreat prior to the Battle of Monmouth, British troops temporarily camped at the Taylor-Butler House and the Marlpit Hall estate. As they settled in, they buried their dead in mass graves in the surrounding area, and local residents have since uncovered some of these remains.
It has also been revealed that Marlpit Hall once served as a slave quarter.
Could it be the spirits of the British soldiers who perished here, the slaves who never left, or Edward Taylor himself, a symbol of lost wealth and social status during the war, who is haunting this house Edward Taylor, the British soldiers that perished on the site or the slaves that never left.
In a recent investigation, one of the trustees, alongside a paranormal investigator, reported hearing the sound of severance bells ringing at the Taylor-Butler House, despite the fact that the wires connecting the bells have been disconnected for decades.
This location was featured as a haunted site in the Asbury Park Press and marks the first public investigation at the Taylor-Butler House. Join us as we uncover the secrets hidden within its walls.
