About this Event
What does it mean to be a local, an immigrant, or a resident?
Brooklyn-based artist Modesto Flako Jimenez is bringing his acclaimed show, Taxilandia, to cities across America and he’s coming to Anacostia, Washington DC! In Anacostia he will design and host a series of hybrid salons with local artists Melani Douglass, John Johnson, and Jason Anderson (JaySun), whose work intersects with gentrification. In-person and streamed live, these participatory salons are open to all and explore our notion of what it means to be a local, an immigrant, or a resident of a place. The salons will challenge us to answer “What is my personal roadmap of home?” and offer creative strategies for confronting gentrification.
These salons are interactive and participatory. We invite you to participate in mapping your neighborhood.
These salons are the creation of the ¡OYE! Group, and jointly ventured by Valley Place Arts Collaborative and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. They will be held in three locations, each with Flako in conversation with a different artist who will share photos and explore their Anacostia neighborhood. The in-person salons will be followed by a breaking of the bread.
If you’re unable to attend in person, we also offer an option, allowing you to experience the event live from anywhere.

Playing your part
Info: When you reserve your ticket to the Taxilandia salons you will be sent a link with a questionnaire which will help us build a community discussion specific to you and your fellow attendees. Working with Flako and with local artists you'll help gather information on the road map and story of gentrification in this region.
