The rolling hills between Florence and Siena offer the world one of its most ancient wines – Chianti. About 700 years ago Chianti was one of the first demarked wine regions worldwide, with a distinct and historically recorded grape variety, Sangiovese. As such, Chianti is both ancient and utterly profound.Unfortunately, it has also historically been one of the most debased wines in the world, with mass production climbing to such heights that its traditional bottle (the straw-wrapped one you stuck a candle in in college) came to be called “fiasco”, in reference to how far, and poorly, wine production had come.
But Chianti is so much more than that. Besides having excellent wines in its own right (modern and traditional), Chianti is historically, culturally, and oenologically connected to many of Tuscany’s other wine-growing regions: Bolgheri, Montalcino, Montepulciano and the Maremma.
And at this tasting, we aim to explore them all. Flight one starts us off with exploring the history and meaning of Chianti, Chianti Classico, and its nine subregions. Flight two takes us into the rise of Super Tuscans and explores the wines of Brunello and Vino Nobile. Flight three brings us to Sangiovese's resurgence, with a look at the modern (and supposedly best) wines of Chianti Classico today. Join us as we explore one of our favorite tastings, the bounties of Central Italy.
