In the early 1970s, Jerry planted his first vineyard in Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco district. With its cool, windy climate and rocky soils, it’s ideal for layered, complex Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. By the 1980s, he expanded to Paso Robles, which is perfect for Bordeaux varietals (especially Cabernet), given the area’s rich soils and dramatic diurnal temperature swings. Today, J. Lohr boasts over 1,400 acres in Monterey and 2,700 more in Paso Robles, producing award-winning wines.
