Zinfandel is America’s variety: It is here, in California, where Zinfandel truly becomes great wine, a player on the international stage showing not only the significance of terroir but also dynamic differences in styles. However, Zinfandel used to be a throw away grape variety made into sweet blush wine. But we at Waterford would argue that a handful of wineries in the early 1960s and '70s changed all of that. By finding specific vineyards for making Zin, these few pioneers set a course for Zinfandel to become one of the greatest wines of the world.
Is that statement true? Or is it just more malarkey from the depths of the Waterford Wine pallet? And furthermore, where did Zinfandel come from – it probably didn’t just shoot forth in the 1960s as a sweet rose wine set to conquer the world?
At this tasting we explore Zinfandel in all its fascinating forms – from styles, to history, to geography, to taste, it’s all right here, in Zin, glorious Zinfandel.
