About this Event
Matariki is a time to connect and reflect on what brings us all together.
Tapa, aute, kapa, ngatu, masi, siapo, hiapo.... Te Moana nui a Kiwa has always connected us, as has the fibre from the Aute tree (Paper Mulberry). This event is a chance to get up close to this amazing plant fibre and to adorn it with your own choice of marking to tell your story, using natural native pigments. Join us to learn about the process of creating tapa and it’s history and ties with pacific peoples including tangata whenua here in Aotearoa. Jakob Su’a-Filo will share his journey in tapa making and demonstrate his mahi. Participants will have the opportunity to try their hand at the beating process, followed by a chance to experiment with painting on tapa using natural pigments. During the painting process you will be encouraged to share your own story on a small tapa piece that you can take home as a taonga for your whānau.
Spaces are limited so please register to attend.
