Ossett Brewery, founded in 1998 by Bob Lawson in Ossett, West Yorkshire, is a respected independent brewer that began in a small brewpub behind The Brewers Pride and has since grown into a larger operation with its own pubs and national distribution, known for both classic and innovative ales. Its microbrewery arm, the Rat Brewery, located beneath the Rat & Ratchet pub in Huddersfield, was reinstated in 2011 and has gained fame for rodent-themed experimental beers such as “White Rat,” some of which have become part of Ossett’s core range. Together, Ossett and the Rat Brewery exemplify Yorkshire’s evolving beer culture, blending traditional craftsmanship in cask ales with modern, hop-forward experimentation, all while maintaining strong local pub and community roots.
