About this Event
Join us for an enchanting Tanabata Japanese Tea Ceremony at the Shumei San Francisco Center. This special gathering invites you to experience the quiet beauty of Japanese tea culture while celebrating Tanabata, the Star Festival, as a time to reflect, set intentions, and connect with the deeper currents of the universe.
Tanabata honors the celestial lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi, represented by the stars Vega and Altair. Separated by the Milky Way, they meet only once a year—reminding us of the preciousness of connection, the patience of the heart, and the power of focused intention. Their reunion inspires us to contemplate our own hopes, dreams, and the harmony that arises when we align with the flow of life.
Traditionally, people write their wishes on tanzaku, colorful strips of paper, and hang them on bamboo branches. In doing so, we practice mindfulness, express gratitude, and set intentions that reflect our highest aspirations. This ritual reminds us that even small acts of reflection can invite profound alignment and spiritual renewal.
At this gathering, a light Japanese meal of chilled somen noodles will be served before the tea ceremony, followed by freshly prepared matcha and traditional Japanese sweets. Through shared food, tea, and contemplative presence, we create a serene space to honor tradition, deepen our awareness, and connect with the subtle energies of the stars.
