A fantastic, scenic route from the quaint village of Keld, nestled in the beautiful Swaledale valley, in the Northern Yorkshire Dales. Almost immediately pass the stunning East Gill Waterfalls (which we luckily return to at the end) before starting our ascent to walk a high path following the side of the River Swale. look out for the multiple barns (Cow'usses) dotted around the landscape. A really picturesque route takes us past Ravenseat (the farm featured on Our Yorkshire Farm TV series) and onto the moor beyond. After a lunch on the big rocks behind Tan Hill Inn the walk back is a gentle descent on the Pennine Way, passing through a neighbouring valley. On returning to Keld we can make use of teh Winter Self-service Community Cafe (dog friendly), or perhaps take a look around the small museum in the village. This route is approx. 11 miles / 18km in length with 1600 ft / 490m elevation gain and would be classed as moderate. A mix of moorland paths, a short section on a minor road, and gravel tracks. The climbs aren't steep, very few stiles (if any), but be prepared for plenty of boggy terrain. Decent waterproof boots are a must on this one and we would also recommend waterproof socks / gaiters too!
Clare (a fellow Geography Teacher and experienced, qualified Mountain Leader) will be leading this walk in January. I intend for this walk to go ahead later in the year, too, as its such a beautiful route! We enjoyed the drive over, but be prepared for a long, windy moorland road to get into Keld. If you would like information on accommodation in the area, please email [email protected]. Parking is available in the village itself, but as always further details will be sent on booking.
We will walk this route at a moderate pace, but will have a rest / lunch break enroute. Expected total time of 5.5-6 hours.
Well behaved, friendly (with other dogs and people), dogs are welcome (max. 2 per person), but please note we are likely to encounter livestock enroute. Dogs must be able to climb stiles or be lifted over them. If using retractable leads, please keep them short to avoid tripping up other participants.
As with all Abigail's Trails, this is a small-group guided walk led by a professional Mountain Leader. Spaces are limited and cost £16 per person.
Accompanied children over the age of 10 welcome.
