Stuart-Liff Collection Library: Tuesday, 15th October at 4.00 pm Grieg: Holberg Suite In this series of talks on Western classical music, Dr. Cavas Bilimoria takes listeners through musical concepts, the lives of composers and their famous works, interspersed with examples from recorded music. This talk, the second in the series this month, explores the Holberg Suite, a set of short pieces composed by Edvard Grieg to mark the 200th birth anniversary of noted Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. Subtitled ‘Suite in the Olden Style’, the work flourishes in the Baroque style but is imbued with Grieg’s Romanticism. The great reception of the original piano version prompted him to adapt it for a string orchestra. Stuart-Liff Collection Library: Thursday, 14th November at 4.00 pm Schubert: Trio No. 1 in B Flat In this series of talks on Western classical music, Dr. Cavas Bilimoria takes listeners through musical concepts, the lives of composers and their famous works, interspersed with examples from recorded music. The talks in November are all about Schubert, starting with his Piano Trio No. 1. A lively and buoyant work with profound lyricism, he finished composing it in 1828, the last year of his life. Robert Schumann’s words beautifully encapsulate the work: One glance at Schubert’`s trio and the troubles of our existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again. Stuart-Liff Collection Library: Thursday, 28th November at 4.00 pm Schubert: Symphony No. 8 (“Unfinished”) This talk, the second in the series this month, explores Schubert’s Symphony No. 8. Why Schubert never finished the work has been an unanswered question in the world of music for over a century. The score includes two movements so remarkable that the moniker ‘`Unfinished’` is all the more vexing. The final page of the second movement contains nine bars, followed by four blank pages. It was in 1960 that musicologist Christa Landon discovered a missing piece that ought to have come before the empty pages, containing bars 10 to 20 and then stopping abruptly. Dr. Cavas Bilimoria’s talk will further unpack the composition. Entry free on a first-come-first-served basis.
