Join us for an exciting book launch and panel event exploring the intersection of language and masculinities in the media. The event will feature a discussion of the book by Dr Robert Lawson.

Lawson’s book provides an in-depth analysis of how language is used in media representations of men and masculinity and how these representations shape our cultural understanding of gender.

The event will also feature a panel discussion with leading experts in the field of masculinities studies, including Dr Lisa Suguira (University of Portsmouth), and Dr Craig Haslop (University of Liverpool).

Panellists will discuss some of the key themes of the book, including the relationship between language and power, the impact of media representations on male identity, and the role of language in perpetuating gender-based violence.

Confirmed panellists:

  • Dr Robert Lawson - Associate Professor in Sociolinguistics in the Birmingham Institute of Media and English and the author of . He has held numerous international positions, including at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Jyväskylä. He also has publications in major peer-reviewed journals, and is a Research Fellow for the Institute for Research on Male Supremacism. His research focuses on language and masculinities, the application of language research outside academia, and language in media contexts.
  • Dr Lisa Sugiura - Reader in Cybercrime and Gender in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Portsmouth. Dr Sugiura is an internationally recognised expert in online gender-based violence and regularly appears on national and international media news outlets.She has published extensively in academic journals and magazines. Her current research projects involve technology-facilitated domestic abuse, the language of cybersexism, victims of computer misuse, and extremist and misogynistic behaviours in manosphere and incel (involuntary celibate) communities.
  • Dr Craig Haslop - Senior Lecturer in Media in the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Liverpool. Dr Haslop has published extensively about contemporary masculinities on social media and television. His research explores questions around representation and power of gendered and sexual identities in the media. His current research projects are focused on issues relating to lad masculinities and forms of online harassment. He is co-author of the #Men4Change toolkit - a workshop resource designed to be used by professionals to help raise young men's awareness of harmful gender norms online and offline.
