While many of South Yorkshire’s most iconic sites—like Listed Buildings and Scheduled Monuments—are nationally recognised, countless other places that shape our local identity remain under the radar. That’s where the Local Heritage List comes in: an initiative that gives everyone the chance to celebrate and protect the buildings, landmarks, and spaces that matter most to them.Join James Thomson from the South Yorkshire Archaeology Service for an illustrated talk exploring Barnsley’s rich and varied heritage. From the town’s industrial roots in linen, coal, and metalworking, to the rise of the co-operative movement and the grandeur of Victorian public buildings, this talk will shine a light on the places we pass every day.
You’ll also learn how you can get involved—by nominating your own favourite historic and archaeological sites for inclusion on the Local Heritage List.
