The first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 26 at 6:00PM. Tim Bascom will lead a discussion of Touching the Fire: Buffalo Dancers, the Sky Bundle, and Other Tales by Roger Welsch. The fictional Nehawka Indians wage a battle for the return of their sacred Sky Bundle, a medicine pouch whose stories take us back in time to the first Nehawka village on the Plains.
Tim Bascom received an MA in English from University of Kansas and an MFA in Creative Writing from University of Iowa. After working for a nonprofit that provided training for writers in Africa and Asia, he taught for twenty-five years as a writing and English professor, serving as Director of Creative Writing at Waldorf University, Iowa. In 2020, he moved back to his home state, becoming Director of the Kansas Book Festival and continues to teach through the Iowa Summer Writing Festival and a low-residency MFA program at Drexel University. Tim is also a published and prize-winning author.
Stretching from Texas north into Canada, the Great Plains region has generated its share of myths and stereotypes, from the hardy pioneer farmer and the vanishing Indian to the Dust Bowl refugee. It has also produced some of our finest writers and a rich literary tradition. In this series, readers will explore the historical and mythical legacies of the Plains and how they continue to shape perceptions of life in Kansas.
The series continues with “Little House on the Prairie” by Laura Ingalls Wilder on Thursday, March 27 at 6:00PM, and “O’ Pioneers”] by Willa Cather on Thursday, April 24 at 6:00PM,
