Joseph Paxton "the busiest man in england" by Danny Wells£12 per person, Tickets available in the Pump Room or online.
Talk starts at 6pm.
From a humble Bedfordshire background Paxton became the Head Gardener at Chatsworth in Derbyshire by the age of 23. With his tremendous abilities and energy, allied to great support from the sixth Duke of Devonshire and his competent and devoted wife Sarah, he became:
-a renowned gardener and plantsman
-an engineer of distinction
-a pioneer of modern architecture.
‘Ask Paxton’ was the advice given to anyone in any kind of difficulty following his incredible design of the ‘Crystal Palace’ for the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park in1851. But there is a lot more to the man for whom Charles Dickens described as a workaholic ‘whose very leisure would K*ll a man of leisure with its hard work’.
Come and hear more about this incredible life.
