About this Event
Join artist and curator Tim Martin for an exclusive insight into the life and work of celebrated painter William Scott, and enjoy an early preview of his bold, abstract work on display in ‘Beauty in Plainness’.
As part of the Trust’s Spotlight Loan programme, three major paintings by William Scott CBE RA (1913–1989) are on loan from Tate. Scott, a pioneering abstract painter, is best known for his distinctive still life and landscape compositions.
After settling in Somerset in the 1940s, he taught at the Bath Academy of Art for ten years and became a key figure in the post-war British art scene. In the 1950s, Scott formed a close friendship with American artist Mark Rothko, who visited and stayed with him in Somerset in 1959.
Hear from exhibition curator Tim Martin about Scott’s unique vision and how he took the ordinary and made it extraordinary. Discover his career spanning six decades and how the South West played host to his relationship with Rothko.
