Hector Berlioz’s visionary masterpiece – Symphonie fantastique subtitled “Episode in the Life of an Artist” – forms the central work on the DuPage Symphony Orchestra’s opening concert. Written in reflection of the composer’s “endless insatiable passion” for the Shakespearean actress Harriet Smithson this five-movement work is one of the most remarkable pinnacles of the orchestral repertoire. Berlioz’s dashing Overture to Le Corsaire and Henri Tomasi’s evocative Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra featuring acclaimed soloist Valentin Kovalev round out the program.
