10:00 – 11:00 Designing Effective Cooperative Boards (Brian Briggeman, Kansas State)

Examples of well-run cooperatives, electing your first Board of Directors, and how to run effective board meetings

11:00 to 11:15 Break

11:15 -12:15 Changing and Challenging Boards (Steve Isaacs, University of Kentucky)

Attracting the next generation of board members, tips on finding new board members, board continuity versus board stagnation, tips on increasing engagement of new board members


12:15 to 12:45 Lunch

Existing materials and new materials for board members (Matson/Richards, SCCCED)

Materials for board members of non-profits and other corps (Jim Johnson, SC SBDC)


12:45 – 1:15 Financial Reporting and Taxes (Kevin Burkett and Steve Richards, Clemson)

Income Tax reporting - Form 1120 C and typical forms. Non-Profit Cooperatives versus Non-Profit Organizations (forms 1023 and 1024)

Accountants for Cooperatives – referral networks

1:15-1:30 Break

1:30 – 2:15 Staying on Task and preparing for the future (All)

Round Table Discussion about: Member “wants” versus Coop mission, Grant funded missions versus core mission, Preparing for the future (funding sources, etc)

Update from SCDA (Kyle Player) and USDA (if available)


2:15 – 3:00 Post Assessment and wrap up– (ALL)

Q&A and wrap up with speakers (those that don’t have to fly out)
