Band leaders and composers Joan Hutton (alto sax, bass clarinet) and Sue Orfield (tenor sax) began their collaboration in 2019, drawn together by a passion for original music. They have released two albums on Shifting Paradigm Records: Take That Back (2022) and Splash (2024). With tight harmonies and precise arrangements, this quintet presents playful, original jazz that is sometimes unpredictable yet deeply rooted in melody.
Joan Hutton is a performer, composer and educator residing in Minneapolis and hailing from Toronto, Canada. Joan’s diverse interests have taken her from jazz, free improv and funk to classical, chamber music and pit orchestras. She also leads a variety of her own jazz groups and is a member of the acclaimed Ancia Saxophone Quartet.
Sue Orfield is an award-winning tenor saxophonist, composer and educator who tours internationally and has recorded on hundreds of albums. She makes her home in the Chippewa Valley of Wisconsin and leads her own blues and bluegrass groups. She is a longtime member of the Tiptons Saxophone Quartet & Drums, and hosted her own TV show, The Sue Orfield Show.
