Parkway's Longest Night service uses the music and rhythms of the Taizé tradition to honor the reality that for many, the holiday season is more burden than blessing. This is a service for all who are feeling overwhelmed, overcome, or overstimulated, and those who would support them. The Longest Night refers traditionally to December 21, the Winter Solstice, when there is more darkness and less light than on any other day of the year, an astronomical phenomenon that often reflects an emotional one. The Longest Night Service uses light to remind us of the words of St. John: “The light has come into the world, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Come, help us bring the light to the longest night.
Feel free to bring a candle to share, for it is better to light one candle than curse the darkness.
