Taiwanese History 101 is a reading group for Taiwanese diaspora, students, people new to Taiwan, and others who want to learn about Taiwanese history to better understand Taiwanese politics and civil society today. Using Dr. Wan-yao Chou’s A New Illustrated History of Taiwan (2015) as our main text, we will be covering Taiwanese history in a series of five introductory sessions: Han settlement and Indigenous Taiwan, Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period, KMT and the authoritarian era, Taiwan democratization, and Taiwan’s contemporary era.Whether you’re someone who’s been looking for others to learn and study with, or searching for time to engage in political education, or wanting to discuss the history of your homeland in English with others, this is the space for you! The reading group will be led by New Bloom founding editor Brian Hioe.
Our reading material will be Chou Wan-yao's A New Illustrated History of Taiwan, which can be purchased at Eslite (https://www.eslite.com/product/1002133192489319?srsltid=AfmBOooprnF1HEmQQJ8U_Wg3arAZ_nt5nisTQMzxxSyFx4GcueLSotCg)
