Leave your mark on Kettering Library's new roof and become part of our town’s history.
About this Event

As the renovation of Kettering Library and Alfred East Gallery continues, we have a once in a lifetime chance to leave your mark on the new roof and become part of Kettering’s history.

The new Collyweston slates are being installed onto the Library roof, ensuring our Grade II Listed heritage buildings are protected for generations to come. A small number of tiles are being made available for the people of Kettering to get creative and get involved in our exciting restoration project.

121 tiles – one for each year since the Library first opened – will be available to the Kettering community. We’ll give you a Collyweston tile, some pens or paint, then you tag the tile and leave your mark.

Maybe you just want to write your name - “Alf was here” or “The Smith family 2025”? Perhaps try a self-portrait? Or maybe paint a mini masterpiece to rival something from the Gallery’s collection? As long as it fits onto one of our Collyweston slates, then the choice is entirely yours. Whatever you choose to do, your finished tile will become part of the Library’s roof and our town’s heritage.

Each tile, roughly the size of a postcard, will be numbered and your name recorded before being installed high up above Sheep Street as part of the Library’s new roof. They will be laid facing down, but even though your artwork will be hidden from view, you will be told which tile is yours so that when the roof works are completed, you will be able to point out your tile to friends and family.

A photo will be taken of each tile before installation, and these images will form part of a future exhibition in Alfred East Gallery. Your tag will be on the Gallery walls for everyone to see.
