Join us for an exhilarating evening of live flamenco music and dance at Tablao Flamenco la Alcachofa! Each month brings a unique lineup of musicians and dancers to the stage at Cafe Artichoke. September's performance features special guest dancers Sophia Solano (Newport, OR) and Kristina Cobarrubia (San Diego, CA). With Lillie Last (dance) Brenna McDonald (guitar), Yeshe Wingerd (voice), and Nick Hutcheson (percussion).

Kristina Cobarrubia--
Kristina has studied flamenco throughout her adult life; in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Fe, and Madrid. Her teachers include Yaelisa, La Tania, Sara Olivar, Antonio Vargas, and Domingo Ortega. She’s danced with the Solera Flamenco Dance Company, Companía Antonio Vargas, and Flamenco Olivar. She was Asst Choreographer for San Diego Opera's DON QUIXOTE in 2009, Choreographer for LA TRAVIATA in 2010, CARMEN in 2011, DON QUIXOTE in 2013 and Asst Director/Choreographer for Eugene Opera's CARMEN in 2011. She has directed Flamenco Arana since 2003, where she produced and choreographed flamenco dance concerts and also performances for the Eveoke Dance Festival, Nations of SD International Dance Festival, and ArtWalk Dance on the Edge. She also has a B.A., Visual Arts from UCSD and an essay of hers, “Madre de Baile,” was published in Mamaphonic: Balancing Motherhood and Other Creative Acts, 2004.

Sophia Solano--
Sophia is a second-generation flamenco artist, daughter of guitarrista José Solano. Her earliest dance teacher was Rafaela de Cádiz, and at 18 Sophia moved to Spain for a semester to immerse in Spanish culture and study flamenco more seriously at the Universidad de Sevilla and Estudio Juan Polvillo. A few years later, she returned to Granada to study at the internationally-renowned school Carmen de las Cuevas where she took private and group classes in technique and choreography, learning primarily from bailaora María la Manzanilla. During this time she also studied with Maricarmen Guerrero, Cristina Aguilera, Javier Martos, and Pilar Fajardos. While living in Oregon she has enjoyed studying with touring artists as they travel through Portland, including workshops with Mercedes Ruiz, Emilio Ochando, and Mara Rey. Over the past several years, Sophia has also taught beginning and intermediate flamenco dance in Newport and Eugene.
