Summary:
Cultural contacts, seaborne trade and the exchange of goods between the Levantine coast and Cyprus in the 2nd millennium BCE have been studied with particular focus on identifying maritime routes and harbours, as well as the shipping vessels used for transport of goods and commodities. Among these 'maritime transport containers' were the Canaanite jars, a well-known category of Levantine storage jars or commercial amphorae, widespread in the Eastern Mediterranean mainly in the Late Bronze Age. While the intensity of trade in the Eastern Mediterranean during the final phase of the Levantine Late Bronze Age (especially in the 13th century BCE) has been extensively documented, a closer investigation of contacts during the transitional phase between the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age, particularly in the 12th century BCE, is still required. This lecture will examine some aspects of the connections between the Levant and Cyprus in this crucial period of change and transformation, through an analysis of selected types of Canaanite jars disseminated during the 13th and 12th centuries BCE. The storage jars documented at specific sites both along the Levantine coast and in Cyprus (such as, for example, at Tell Kazel, in coastal Syria, or at Maa and Pyla on the Cypriot side) can be compared with the repertoires of Northern and Southern Levant, as well as, in certain cases, with the Anatolian tradition. Different levels of interaction and contact can be identified, such as the transfer of vessels, the transmission of models and potters’ tradition, and even a few cases of morphological hybridization.
