About this Event

SYNERGY & WIT artists Holly Alderman and John Kernochan welcome you to the Atrium gallery, for Boston Design Week 2024 at his historic Brickyard Office Park, opposite Danehy Park in Cambridge. Enter the Atrium's arched double-doors at the brick walkway beside a spacious open pergola for outdoor dining at Gran Gusto Trattoria Restaurant next door, on Sherman Street, across from a popular baseball field.

Inside the Atrium, with a clerestory in the former brick factory re-envisioned by John Kernochan, eyes will instantly find spring colors high above in tall striped banners of pearlescent painted patterns under circular skylights, and below, storyteller Notes of Note, Kernochan's evocative wall art of musical signs and motifs in watercolor witticisms, nearby Alderman's accent art paintings on canvas squares and dots.

Look forward to gaze the unseen in symmetry structures of ordered space, among all possible details that govern design: mirror reflection lines, glide lines, abstract forms, angles, rotations and rotocenters 1,2,3,4. Pick up a pencil and pattern postcard, try the art form, draw the symmetry lines for a synergy souvenir.

As tools for design thinking, infinite patterns in a plane arrange thousands or trillions of art elements to "produce a total effect greater than the sum of the parts" -- which is the definition of 'synergy' and the essence of systems art, systems thinking, art of structure, Op Art variations, and everything under the sun.

Look back two hundred years at a glance, don't miss the systems art of 1824, a voyage pittoresque of pre-industrial decorative systems in panoramic scenic wallpaper redux. In the 1820s in Paris, Dufour artisans printed thousands of wood blocks to assemble extravagant, epic travel rooms with a story to tell, wrapped in auras (the phenomenon of a distance, however close it may be--Walter Benjamin) with views for miles, yet indoors merely 30 to 60 feet wide. See how edges of small antique block papers fit together to reveal extremely rare exotique, otherness otherwise unseen, true travel adventures of1824, now renewed for new audiences in 2024, in fine custom digital printing by Wallquest.

The Synergy Wit show is a quest to understand how art synergetics and narrative whimsey are tools for the structure of thought, to envision the syntax of choices, the limits and the freedom of art and design, for the benefit of all humanity.

Opening reception: Wed., April 24, 4-6 pm. Art show open Apr. 25 to May 5, Tues-Sat 12 noon - 6 pm, Sun. 4 - 6 pm, closed Monday.
