A dynamic event examining the power and pedagogy of listening. Learn how to create active, sensitive, listening-centered classrooms.
About this Event

On Monday, November 18, join educators to examine and discuss:

What are strategies for teaching listening in the classroom?

What can you do when listening breaks down?

How can you facilitate courageous conversations in educational settings?

Join us in building community and awareness around listening in education!

During this Symposium, educators in the Pedagogy of Listening Lab will:

  • Present on the role and practicality of active, informed, and self reflective listening in education.
  • Collectively discuss strategies for listening in educational settings, and problem-solve obstacles to listening.
  • Share tools and strategies for listening in the classroom.
  • Facilitate experiential sessions to promote dialogue across differences with real time sharing.
  • Provide opportunities for large and small group exercises.
  • Offer feedback and opportunities for open dialogue.

The Pedagogy of Listening Lab is in our second year of collaboration between educators in the Oral History Master of Arts program, Narrative Medicine program, Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, University Libraries, and the School of Social Work at Columbia University. It is funded by the Dialogue Across Difference Seed Grant Initiative. We will share our exciting findings from our first year.

This event is open to Columbia-affiliated educators across all contexts. Participants may attend just a part of the symposium or stay all day.
