“In Praise of Winds: Remembering Gunther Schuller at 100” – 2025 marks the hundredth anniversary of the birth of legendary conductor, composer, horn player, and pedagogue, Gunther Schuller. The maestro made his mark in many corners of the Classical music world, and was one of the pioneers of bringing the history and influence of jazz into orchestral concert halls. The University of Michigan Symphony Band celebrates Schuller’s unparalleled legacy with a performance of his epic Third Symphony, commissioned and premiered by the Symphony Band in the 1980s, and which the composer lovingly titled “In Praise of Winds.” The Symphony will be paired with one of Schuller’s favorite works and one of the most important pieces in the wind music canon, Mozart’s immortal Gran Partita. Jason Fettig, conductor.
