Le Concerto pour violoncelle en mi est la dernière œuvre majeure du compositeur britannique Edward Elgar. Composé en 1919, au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, ce concerto baigne dans une atmosphère élégiaque et contemplative peut être liée à l’anxiété, au désespoir et à la désillusion des années de guerre. En 1915, Jean Sibelius est un compositeur reconnu, dont le 50e anniversaire est déclaré jour férié en Finlande. Pourtant, il doute de lui-même : compte tenu des récentes réalisations modernistes de Stravinsky, des impressionnistes français et de Schönberg. Doit-il changer radicalement son style de composition ? Son esthétique sonore d’inspiration nationaliste et hautement romantique a-t-elle encore de l’avenir ? Dans sa Cinquième Symphonie, Sibelius choisit finalement de rester fidèle à lui-même.

Het Celloconcerto in e is het laatste grote werk van de Britse componist Edward Elgar. Hij schreef dit vierdelig concerto in 1919, net na de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De elegische en contemplatieve sfeer kan verbonden worden met de angst, wanhoop en desillusie van de oorlogsjaren. In 1915 was Jean Sibelius een gevestigd componist wiens 50ste verjaardag werd uitgeroepen tot een nationale feestdag in Finland. Toch twijfelde hij aan zichzelf: moest hij, rekening houdende met de recente modernistische verwezenlijkingen van Stravinski, de Franse impressionisten en Schönberg zijn compositiestijl radicaal omgooien of zat er nog toekomst in zijn nationalistisch geïnspireerde, hoogromantische klankesthetica? In de Vijfde symfonie, koos hij er gaandeweg voor om trouw te blijven aan zichzelf.

By 1915, Jean Sibelius was an established composer whose 50th birthday was declared a public holiday in Finland. Yet he doubted himself. Should he radically change his compositional style in the light of the recent modernist achievements of Stravinsky, the French Impressionists and Schoenberg, or was there still a future for his nationalistically inspired, highly-romantic sound aesthetics? In the Fifth Symphony, he gradually chose to remain true to himself.
