Sydney Sprague
Sydney Sprague transforms her sadness, anxiety, and existential dread into a powerful blend of driving guitars, shimmering melodies, and the bittersweet charm of indie pop-rock. Her music, laced with sharp observations and a self-aware sense of dark humor, evokes the best of 90s alt-rock and classic power-pop, all while embracing a melancholy suited to these chaotic times. Intimate, vulnerable, and autobiographical, her songs are both confrontational and strangely uplifting. Her sophomore album, somebody in hell loves you, lives up to its devilishly saccharine title—boldly accessible, intelligent, and irresistibly catchy.
Sprague’s growing recognition stems from a combination of glowing press, word-of-mouth, and a standout tour with Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional. Tracks like “steve,” “quitter,” and “i refuse to die” have become organic streaming hits, with “object permanence” alone nearing 1 million Spotify streams. Despite the grueling schedule of an indie artist, Sydney remains steadfast: “As a smaller artist, it’s almost impossible financially,” she admits, “but I love it so much.”
Much of somebody in hell loves you was written during the pandemic lockdowns, yet it takes a less angsty tone than her debut. “And not because I’m a less angsty person,” she clarifies. “Obviously, none of us were in a good place in 2020. It was a depressing time. But I didn’t want to wallow in that. I wrote more as an exercise to distract myself from my woes.” This shift led to a collection of observational storytelling—exploring the drama of those around her and revisiting her own past.
Sydney Sprague’s music captures the contradictions of modern life: deeply personal yet universally relatable, melancholic yet uplifting. It’s a testament to her ability to channel life’s chaos into something that resonates long after the final chord.
