Rates of self-harm among young people, aged 10-25, in Australia have been increasing over the past decade. Come along to this pub discussion for insights into the experience of self-harm among young people and ways in which clinicians can respond effectively.Rates of self-harm among young people have been increasing over the past decade, both in Australia and other middle-high income countries. In Australia, this increase is particularly pronounced among young women, whose rates of hospitalised self-harm have almost doubled between 2008-09 to 2020-21. A greater understanding of the experiences of self-harm among young people is needed to address this issue.
This presentation will therefore provide an overview of the experience of self-harm among young people, including common precipitants and functions of self-harm, drawn from a recent review of the literature. I will also be presenting on recent qualitative findings drawn from interviews with Australian young women with a history of self-harm. These preliminary findings will provide insight into how this sample would prefer to receive support, and how clinicians can respond effectively to young people presenting with self-harm.
