The organ of Sydney Korean Community Church has its origins in an instrument of about 8 stops of British origin that came to Australia in 1839. Over the years, there have been various rebuilds and enlargements. The most significant for present purposes is the significant work done by Fincham in 1903 from which the organ emerged as a 3/35 instrument. An unfortunate rebuild in 1980 led to a further rebuild in 2001 by Australian Pipe Organs, the object of which was essentially to restore the organ to its 1903 glory. The extent to which that aim has been accomplished is plain from Kelvin Hastie's comment on the result: "What was only recently considered an unwieldy dinosaur, destined for extinction, has now been reincarnated as one of the finest church organs in Sydney and the largest instrument on the upper North Shore."
We would ordinarily schedule an event like this for a Saturday, but the Church is a busy one for which Thursdays are the most convenient day for a visit. We hope that despite the choice of a weekday, many will come to hear - and hopefully play - this instrument. One of the organists of the Church will be present to play, and we also expect to see a number of members of the congregation. Please come along if you are able!
